The Miseducation of the Black Womyn

Tang Teaching Museum's Art Gallery
Skidmore College

This performance is conceived and directed by Maryam DeWitt (’18 Social Work), in collaboration with six female students on campus from diverse backgrounds.

The three-part project —documentary film, performance, and essay— tells the stories of black womyn, written and performed by black womyn without the revision of their colonizers. The performers explore six different issues that form the black womyn’s self-esteem: hair, identity, beauty standards, sexuality, complexion, and acceptance of self. They use mesmerizing and enticing language to invite the viewers into their world. Interwoven in the visual representation of each story is a piece of artistry that inspired the artist during the research phase of the project.

FREE and open to the public.
